Who Is the True Father of the Independent State of Papua New Guinea?

As we approach PNG’s 50th Independence celebration, this is a question we must ask ourselves.

The political system we use today was introduced by European explorers under the authority of the British Crown. The first recorded European to set foot on our shores was Jorge de Meneses, a Portuguese navigator, in 1526. He landed in the northern part of New Guinea what we now call the New Guinea Islands.

This means the northern coast of New Guinea and the New Guinea Islands were the first places in our country to make contact with the white man. Yet it took Europeans 300 to 400 years before they finally settled here.

Why did it take so long?

History tells us that in those days, New Guinea had no army, no police, and no centralized government only small villages and close knit communities. In other countries, this would have made colonial conquest easier. But our grandparents and great-grandparents had a secret strength:

Their belief system.

Our tumbuna believed only in their own chiefs, their own land, their own ocean, their own traditions, their own resources, and their own people. That loyalty was their greatest power and protection.

By the 1800s, Europeans realized New Guinea was difficult to control. The people simply weren’t interested in foreign rulers. So, they tried a different tactic: introducing religion bringing the idea of a foreign God in heaven and distributing “cargo” in His name.

Some of our ancestors resisted fiercely. There were clashes. Some of our people were taken away to work on sugar plantations in Queensland a dark chapter known as blackbirding often through trickery or force.

By the early 1900s, the world was in turmoil. World War II erupted in 1942, with Japan and the United States fighting across our islands. The war, like many before it, was ultimately about land and resources to feed the wealth of kings and queens.

During this time, one man rose to protect his people and their way of life: Paliau Maloat of Baluan Island, Manus Province. Witnessing the injustices of both Japanese soldiers and the Australian Administration, Paliau began defending his people politically, culturally, and spiritually.

In 1942 33 years before PNG independence he founded The Paliau Movement, the first Indigenous political movement that openly rejected the white man’s governance and religion. For nine solid years, he fought for self rule.

In 1951, the Australian and British Administration finally granted him the right to establish Baluan Native Council PNG’s first form of self government.

Thirteen years later, in 1964, Paliau became the first Member of Parliament for Manus. In Parliament, he met Michael Somare whom he himself name when born in Rabaul during the war, and together with other visionary leaders, they laid the groundwork for PNG’s independence in 1975.

Today, Paliau’s movement survives as Win Nation of which I am the current Interim President. For decades, outsiders have tried to dismiss it as a “cargo cult,” but we have always been clear: we believe in a government entirely run by our own culture, traditions, and Melanesian ways.

If Papua New Guinea truly wants to be independent not just in name but in spirit and governance Win Nation Manus has the answer.

A REMINDER OF COLONIALISM IN RELATION TO COMMONWEATH COUNTRIES TODAY

Personally, I despise the monarchy and everything it represents. The Crown has built its wealth on stolen land, exploited resources, slavery and genocide. These are facts, not opinions.

So why are we, an independent nation, continuing to celebrate and honor such a vile establishment? Why do we need some fake recognition from a vile empire.

Our ancestors once roamed freely on this land until the ships landed on our shores univited. They said, in the name of the King, they discovered a land and called it a colony to the empire. But there were people already living on that land idiots, this isn't Mars, its the home of indigenous people who own that land as their home.

These empires came in, stole all our resources and rare earth minerals, used locals as cheap labor for the farms and industries, killed our people for unintended mistakes like not making their cup of tea properly, etc. They literally looted and plundered all that was valuable only to enrich the wealth of their monarch. 

Thus, honoring the King’s Birthday or getting the knighthood or some useless medals from that same vile empire  is another unwanted reminder of colonial rule. We shouldn't be honoring anything about this monarch, but yet we continue to attach ourselves to this bafoonery. We should be celebrating their deaths instead because that is a good reminder of how bad colonialism was. The death of Queen Elizabeth should now be a holiday.

Besides, we don't get anything from being a member of the Commonwealth except some meaningless medals and unnecessary titles to some gullible individuals. We call ourselves members of the Commonwealth, but the actual wealth is not equal. There is a massive gap between our level of poverty and their wealth, so what makes us common in wealth? Very stupid of us still calling ourselves common wealth.

50 years of longlong is enough. At this anniversary, PNG should now cut off any resemblance of this imperial monstrosity.

We live in Modern Humanity Civilisation today, different from colonialism rules in the past

All colonialism toward a country is a basic motive of Economic Interest and Maintaining Political Power interest. So that

Colonies live badly Suffering from all sorts of aspects of life but Colonisers use moments of opportunity to suck all sorts of Natural Resources and to focus on Genocide,  Ecocide and Ethnocide and so on.

Who is Indonesian? 

Indonesian is colonialist practising brutality, and inhumane treatment toward West Papuan never happened with colonial rulers in the past.

 Indonesian Colonialism in West Papua is alive and well.

 Indonesian rule in West Papua is too brutal,  oppressor, atrocity, and inhumane action to continue practice in West Papua in this Modern Democracy time. 

Indonesia's behaviour toward West Papua are: 

***to reject the investigation of the human rights emerging situation by the United Nations Human Rights were demanded by Pacific Countries and African-Caribean countries in the Year 2019.

*** Churches groups, ULMWP, and TPN-OPM demanded open peaceful dialogue under monitoring by a third party but Indonesian has to reject it. 

***West Papuan demand stopped implementing Special Autonomy second terms but rejected and continue implementing to supported by Military Power.

These are the reality of Indonesian colonial rulers in West Papua Melanesian Territory.

This is the time arrived for to Melanesian Governments to take accountability,  credibility,  and responsibility in this MSG meeting in June-July 2023 to kick the goal of West  Papua becoming Fully membership of the MSG is the only option to changing the System Political in cultural, and ethnically and territorially changing forever for just and good 

Indonesian Politics you have to know is: 

*** Indonesian used the global Cold War between block West and East in terms of West Papua conflict with American and other Western Countries to invade and occupied in

West Papua until today. 

In the same way,  today,  Indonesian Politic still using the moment cold war as a powerful tool to destroy the West Papuan People's interest in Independence  

***New York 1963 and Roman Agreement were not involved West Papuan representative has to manipulate West Papuan Basic Fundamental Rights. 

*** Indonesia is using Political Economics Ideology to convince Melanesian Governments including other Governments in Pacific Region to win Indonesian interest in retaining colonial rule in West Papua. 

These are bit situations related to West Papua's long-standing conflicts today.

10 Indonesian Strategies to Conquer the Struggle of the West Papuan Nation:

1. LITERAISM DOMINATION

The main strategy of colonialism is to use military force to conquer the nation's territory.  Military aggression was deployed.  

The killing operation was carried out.  

The people were expelled, terrorized and helpless.  

Then military reinforcement and occupation through territorial commands was established.  All sectors are controlled under military pressure.  Military violence was carried out repeatedly so that the colonized really surrendered.

2. CONTROL - RESOURCES

Colonialism's goal was to extract natural resources to enrich the rulers and build their political power.  The natural resources of the colonized people were confiscated, the people were evicted, then exploitation was promoted without compromise with the nation owning the natural resources.  Colonized peoples are made alienated and economically powerless so that they are subject to the production and distribution of goods and services owned by the colonials.

3. POWER EXPANSION

This is a colonial strategy of conquest to strengthen regional control colonies by opening and expanding their administrative, colonial areas.  Formation of regions: newly expanded divisions and divided as small as possible.  Then the law and all rules are tightened to control and dominate.  Colonized peoples are recruited to become officials in order to forget their fate as colonized people.

4. MIGRATION OF COLOR CITIZENS

The goal of colonialism is to take  over the territory.  So large-scale shipments of colonial citizens were carried out. Because they were the ones who, in quantity and quality, would conquer the colonized people and support the programs of the colonial rulers.  In the end, the conquered territories will be claimed as their nation, so that with their racist superiority they feel fully entitled.

5. EXTERMINATION OF HISTORY & CULTURE

The invaders will try to destroy it history and culture of the colonized peoples submissive to the invaders.  All values, norms, language, customs, and political history are prohibited from being displayed in public spaces in social life.  Then it was replaced with the colonialist's popular culture.  The conquered peoples were forced to memorize and respect the history and culture of the colonizing peoples.

6. DESTROY MORALITY

The fastest way of conquest is to destroy consciousness. So that the invaders destroy the morale of the colonized people through drinking, prostitution, gambling, and useless riots.  

He knows that alcohol and sex are a quick way to destroy a colonized nation so that it does not exist and is easily conquered.  In order for the productive sectors to be controlled by the colonizers and the colonized people truly surrender.

7. DIVISION CONNECTION

The invaders will break up the defense force colonized peoples in conflicts division created by the occupiers.  Fighting against sheep, wars between religions, wars between clans, tribes, and groups in captivity.

The colonized peoples were kept busy fighting each other in the colonial political packages given for example expansion, positions, parties, elections, etc.  This was done so that the colonized people would not be aware, unite and fight against the invaders.

8. COLONIAL LEGAL REPRESSION

In the colonies, the voices of criticism and.

This struggle was silenced and repressed with law.  The people who fight against the colonialists will be accused of treason, separatism, criminals or terrorists.  If they were not killed, they were unjustly arrested and imprisoned under colonial criminal articles.  Also, if the people defend their rights to customary land, customary forests, and all their rights, they will be confronted with colonial laws that protect rulers and entrepreneurs (companies).  ?

 

9. INFORMATION CONTROL

Media, education, and all public spaces are controlled and controlled to influence the perceptions of the colonized people.  The goal is for the colonized people to justify and strengthen the narrative of the colonial rulers.  All the propaganda and stigma against the colonized people was launched so that the colonized people blamed themselves and their fellow nations, so that the colonized people felt they needed colonialists.

10. STRENGTHEN FOREIGN ALLIES

Colonialism broke the International Law.  However to maintain its illegality, the invaders.  need the support of foreign countries by offering the economic benefits of their colonies to foreign countries.  Global power is controlled to cover up the engineering of colonialism and then strengthens natural resource investment relations in the colonized areas and military assistance.  So that the international support the colonial conquest.

His conclusion: Indonesian colonialism colonized the West Papuan people not because of human resources but because they wanted to control the natural resources in Papua's paradise.

What about West Papua? It’s our Ukraine

PORT MORESBY - It took less than a week for the world to come together to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Sanctions were applied to Putin, oligarchs and the Russian Central Bank, there was a suspension of SWIFT banking services and weapons and aid money were supplied to Ukraine.

But the question many are asking, especially in the Pacific Islands, is what about West Papua?

West Papua has been illegally occupied by Indonesia since 1963. Brutal abuse and human rights violations have continued unabated since then and are endemic.

The United Nations Human Rights Commission said on Tuesday that:

“….between April and November 2021, we received allegations indicating several instances of extrajudicial killings, including of young children, enforced disappearance, torture and inhuman treatment and the forced displacement of at least 5,000 indigenous Papuans by security forces.”

The UN knows what is happening, so the obvious question is why isn’t the UN, European Union, United States or Australia doing anything about it?

The issue is complex, and I want to talk about just one, and probably the most important, aspect: the geopolitical benefits of pleasing Indonesia.

Indonesia has been and is an important ally of the US and Australian, the two powers with the highest stake in the region.

During the Cold War, the theory of the ‘domino effect’ of Communist ideology spread through South-East Asia.

Indonesia was an important ally of the West against communism and it actively suppressed Communism.

To please their ally, the US and other Western countries left Indonesia to occupy West Papua following the so called Act of Free Choice, branded as ‘Act of No Choice’ by many people.

It was a form of referendum where about 1,000 representatives of West Papua were forced to sign a document integrating West Papua into Indonesia.

Today the same countries are worried about the rise of China. And they continue to ignore Indonesian atrocities in West Papua.

Southeast Asian countries need US help to stand up against China so remain silent. India has border conflicts with China so it remains silent. Japan has its own conflicts with China, and Australia values Indonesia as an ally.

There are rumours that China sympathises with West Papua, although it appears ironic that a Communist country with a poor record of human rights would be sympathetic or human rights abuses in West Papua.

The reason could be that Indonesia has claims over some parts of the South China Sea which China considers its own and that Indonesia has criticised China over its imprisonment of Muslim minorities.

There are allegations that China maintains a modern day labour prison camp for an estimated one million Muslim Uyghurs. China calls it a re-education camp.

Indonesia, the largest Muslim nation on earth, has condemned China over this issue and rumours started emerging that China then decided to support West Papuans.

It looks like a classic case of ‘my enemy’s enemy is my friend’.

In the Pacific, only Vanuatu has consistently supported West Papua’s independence and spoken up in the UN.

Papua New Guinean, which shares a 700km land border with Indonesia, has been very cautious. Indonesia has huge standing army compared to PNG.

Countries in the region have called for commission of inquiry into West Papua, but it has never taken place.

Further calls to allow journalists into West Papua have been ignored. In the absence of an international presence, Indonesia controls the narrative.

So here is how world politics seem to play: If there is an invasion or occupation or atrocities against a group of people that affects the interests of the West, and the US in particular, there is condemnation and action.

The difference between Ukraine and West Papua is that, in Ukraine, Russia is the aggressor.

Russia is the enemy of the West. So the invasion is considered illegal and killing civilians in Ukraine amounts to war crimes.

In West Papua, the same or even worse has been occurring for over 70 years. Buts it’s been carried out by an ally of the West.

Unless the geopolitics in the region change and US and its allies no longer need Indonesia, it seems the West will continue to ignore West Papua.

It’s possible that one day China can step up its support for West Papua.

There’s no help from Australia, which also supplies arms to the Indonesian military.

The Pacific Islands countries are the only realistic voices. They have to do what Vanuatu has been doing.

MILITARISATION OF INDIGENOUS LAND OF WEST PAPUA.

Vanuatu Free West Papua Association is forwarding this Petition to the UN Experts Mechanisms on the Right of Indigenous Peoples and the Universal Periodic Review on Indonesia (Shadow Report)

We have received reports from Indonesia Amnesty International and Transparency International that the human rights situation caused by the presence of Indonesian Military in West Papua is becoming worst. The situation currently is that:

• The Indonesian Government has banned internet access for Indigenous West Papuans.

• from the ground it is difficult to gather information due to reporting restrictions, placed on International journalists in the region 

• The increased Indonesian military deployment in West Papua since 2018 has resulted in around 2,000 casualties, displacement of around 50,000 civilians and 5,000 fled to seek asylum in PNG.

Indonesian Military to West Papua has also contribute as a resulted in barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of mankind, and the advent of a world in which human beings shall enjoy freedom of speech and belief and freedom from fear and what has been proclaimed as the highest aspiration of the common people.

The Indigenous Melanesian People of the West Papua Province of Indonesia are regarded as minority ethnic group that needs to be free from genocides and inhuman treatments.

We reaffirm the Principles of the UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS that recognizes ‘the inherent dignity of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world’.

The Indigenous Melanesian people of West Papua are also part of that foundation of freedom, justice and peace of the Melanesian Archipelago. They are the Melanesian Indigenous minority under Indonesia regime, who have a right to freedom and self-determination as declared by the UN Resolution 15, 14 on decolonization.

We strongly affirmed that any development in the indigenous land of West Papua should apply the principles of Free, Prior and Informed Consent of indigenous West Papuan as enshrines the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. 

IN THE TRUE SPIRIT OF SOLITARITY WE THE PEOPLE OF THE REPUBLIC OF VANUATU AND IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE ENTIRE INDIGENOUS MELANSIAN PEOPLE:

We appeal to the International Community to:

1 Facilitate an urgent UN Human Rights fact findings mission to West Papua.

2 Send International journalist to West Papua to report on the current issues affecting the indigenous population.  

3 Mediate a peaceful transition for a free West Papua and

4 Up hold the principle of UN resolution 15,14 of 2000 to yearning West Papua to its freedom, and,

5 FINALLY, WE CALL UPON Indonesia to withdraw its administrative and military power from West Papua.

Africa may never be able to build any of the prosperous economies we built in the past because we are nearly working entirely to support the economies of others while every value we have on our land is made to be taken away for free.

You may like to ask the next person to you this question: "why do African countries sell their product to America in Dollars, to EU countries in Euros, and to China in Yuan?" 

The obvious answer you are likely to receive is: Because we need foreign exchange!

But, if we need foreign exchange (their currency) to demand for what they have of which we are in need, why don't they also need foreign exchange (our currency) to demand for what we have of which they are in need?

We want foreign currency, they want our value.

We have been Programmed into thinking that their paper is either more valuable or equally in value to our valuable resources and goods. But our paper worth nothing to their resources and goods.

But, the truth of the concept of paper money is that it only worth the value of goods or resources you own not that of others. This is the reason why Britain sells her products to US, EU, Africa or any other country in the British Pounds Sterling, Germany sells her products in Euros to Everyone including the US and China. When China want to own a share of the US Economy, it had to produce goods and values and sell them on the US market to obtain US dollars in order to use that dollar to obtain a share of the US economy through bonds and bills. China doesn't sell her product to America and pack US dollars to Chinese.

Our economic management teams must begin to understand that, no matter how little our resources may look in their eyes in their understanding, they are not valuess so they must be sold in our currencies. To allow them to be sold in the currencies of others means that we simply do not know that they even have any value at all.

West Papuan people will not take part in Indonesia’s 2019 presidential and legislative elections, say the Indonesian People’s Front for West Papua (FRI-WP) and the Papuan Student Alliance (AMP).

This is because they accuse the Indonesian government of illegal political practices in Papua, of failing to uphold the rights of the Papuan people and because both presidential candidates have a bad track record on Papua.

“Indonesia is a state which since the declaration of the Trikora operation on December 19, 1961, has conducted illegal political activities in the territory”, said FRI-WP spokesperson Surya Anta at the Jakarta Legal Aid Foundation (LBH Jakarta) offices in Central Jakarta last week.

“Because of this we are taking a position and declaring that we will not take part in the 2019 presidential or legislative elections,” he said.

Anta explained that what they mean by the territory of West Papua was an area extending from Numbai to Merauke, Raja Ampat to Baliem and Biak Island to Adi Island.

The groups also believe that the contestants in the 2019 election on April 17 are the same as those in previous elections where candidates are only interested in gathering votes from the Papuan people.

However, there has been no effort by the legislative, presidential or vice-presidential candidates to uphold the rights of the West Papuan people, they say.

Maintaining colonialism

Speaking in the same vein, Student Struggle Center for National Liberation (Pembebasan) national collective secretary-general Samsi Mahmud said that the Papuan people were not interested in the 2019 elections.

Aside from Indonesia’s illegal political activities, according to Mahmud none of the political parties are articulating the wishes of the Papuan people and the elections are only aimed at maintaining the practice of colonialism.

“[The elections] are a tool for the colonial government to put local power holders in place to safeguard their interests”, said Mahmud.

AMP member Erepul Sama said there was no difference between the two presidential candidates, incumbent President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and Prabowo Subianto, particularly in their handling of human rights violations.

“Prabowo himself has a bad track record in Papua such as the Mapenduma incident. But this doesn’t mean that Jokowi is any better”, said Sama.

“Jokowi has allowed human rights violations to occur again and again, for example in the bloody Paniai case which has still not been resolved”, he added.

Aside from declaring that they will not take part in the 2019 elections, the FRP-WP and the AMP made three other demands:

• West Papuans be given the right to self-determination,
• All organic and non-organic troops be withdrawn from Papua, and
• Journalists be given free access to Papua.

Background
Operation Trikora was declared by Indonesian founding President Sukarno in the Central Java city of Yogyakarta on December 19, 1961.

It was an Indonesian military operation aimed at harassing and forcing the Dutch out of Netherlands New Guinea in 1961-62 rather than one intended to suppress a nascent independence movement.

The Mapenduma operation was a botched rescue operation in the remote Mapenduma area of West Papua led by then Kopassus commander Prabowo Subianto in 1996 to secure the release of World Wildlife Fund researches taken hostage by the Free Papua Movement.

The attempt ended in a military attack on Geselema village resulting in the death of up to eight civilians.

On December 8, 2014, barely two months after Widodo was sworn in as president, five students were killed and 17 others seriously injured when police and military opened fire on a group of protesters and local residents in the town of Enarotali, Paniai regency.

Shortly after the incident, Widodo personally pledged to resolve the case but four years into his presidency no one has been held accountable for the shootings.
