LET US KEEP WEST PAPUA LIBERATION IN OUR GOALS FOR 2024

In 1975 when PNG got independence our population was 2.5million. West Papuans were around 1.5million people. Today 48 years later we are almost 17million according to UN or 12million in our estimates. West Papuan Melanesian population remains below 3million. Over the course of 60 years since they illegally invaded in 1962 Indonesia has systematically wiped out the Melanesian people, directly and indirectly. Silent genocide.

Number of West Papuans professionals, senior public servants, businessmen and women etc are lowest in whole of Indonesia. We have trained more West Papuans to be Lawyers, pilots, doctors, accountants etc than whole of Indonesia in 60 years. If we allow ourselves to become numb or indifferent to injustice right before our door steps  we will allow it to happen to us too. If we close our eyes, ears and dare not speak against  Killings and Violence right before our eyes too we will become numb and indifferent to it too when it happens to us.

We have made a big statement against the views of the majority of the World to recognise Jerusalem as Capital of Israel. Why can’t we have the courage to make similar or some more significant statement about the plight of our people on our ancestral land

As we start the year too I want to remind you of a great Papuan artist, Mecu Imbiri. Aged now but his voice and song is timeless and ever powerful rally for Papuan Freedom. Let their songs be heard so they are not forgotten. Through the songs it’s tells their plight, pain, horrors and cry for help and most of all for freedom.  We need to escalate the voices of freedom at all levels and platforms in 2024!

Spirit of Papua Merdeka Rockin the Stage: Full Concert at Fest Napuan | ...

Muhammadiyah leader Amien Rais: West Papua Is On target To Be Free

2014 Interview.

A call for boycott of the 2019 Indonesian Presidential and General Elections by indigenous Papuans puts wind in the sail. And, it escalates the internationalisation of the West Papua issue since 2014. It was coming.

For decades Indonesia used the ‘security approach’ that led to nowhere. It was also Papuan nationalists who gained the hard yards.https://www.radionz.co.nz/international/pacific-news/384576/military-approach-questioned-as-violence-worsens-in-papua

And, Indonesia cannot continue its claim to illegal sovereignty over the former Dutch colony. This includes deception through propaganda as it fights the decades – old ‘secret war’ on Australia’s doorstep. The  democratization project including extending universal suffrage to its restive region West Papua turns out to be a case of hubris & hypocrisy on steroids.

Here is why.

In Indonesia, Professor Amien Rais is the most influential Muhammadiyah figure. He is also former chairman of the Indonesian People's Consultative Assembly.  His interview with Metro Tv in 2014, four years ago, put into its correct perspective the road map on the independence movement in West Papua.

Professor Amien Rais said the latest information on the West Papua issue is already in the public domain. He concluded that West Papua was on its way out of the unitary Republic of Indonesia.

In the age of internet and cyberspace technology, information on the West Papua issue was available at the finger tips, and the conclusions can be deduced when one explores the internet for answers to questions about the struggle for independence in the former Dutch colony.

The conclusion is based on his four findings:

(1) The issue of West Papua and its right to self – determination has become a problem for African countries.

(2) The struggle for independence by indigenous Papuans has escalated over the decades since the 1960s, but especially in recent years with a comprehensive network of advocacy groups through the world

(3)Pro – independence Papuan nationalists have systematically built an intellectual network with major universities throughout the world from Sydney to Harvard, Cambrigde, etc.

(4) If the West Papua issue is channeled through regional forums such as MSG and PIF, and eventually brought to the UN decolonization committee, Indonesia cannot do anything about it.

In the case of Aceh, there was a need for a third party, the same with East Timor in which the UN as the third party intervened to conduct a referendum. West Papua will follow by all means. This is because the empirical evidence is on the table. And, there is no other way to solve the West Papua Conflict but follow the examples of Aceh and East Timor.

The position held by Professor Amien Rais was shared by other Indonesian intellectuals.

Professor Dr. Adnan Buyung Nasution. In September 2015, aged 81, Indonesia bid farewell to a man known for his idealism, anti-corruption and criticism of any Indonesian president holding office, when he died at Pondok Indah Hospital, South Jakarta.

But, his legacy is fresh air that drives a ‘democratising’ Indonesia today.

He founded the Legal Aid Institute in Indonesia and was a legal expert whose reputation already became a legacy. In 2010, he was appointed as Honorary Professorial Fellow in the Melbourne Law School, in recognition of his huge contribution to constitutional studies and scholarship on Indonesian law, and his commitment to building the rule of law in his home country.

His pioneering work on legal aid and law reform, as well as being a key figure in the development of human rights law and constitutionalism in Indonesia, put him in a good position to talk on the West Papua issue. The reasoning is a very practical one, and put down to his defense of the weak.

Professor Dr. Adnan Buyung Nasution had a network of colleagues, and the consensus spread throughout the Indonesian civil society. In a democratising Indonesia, it is entrenched. And, allowing for error margin on the best way to look at the West Papua issue, this is traced to his work as a lawyer and human rights and pro-democracy activist during the reign of Indonesia's late President Suharto.

One of his perspectives is for a different conversation on West Papua, which he concluded is possible.https://www.radionz.co.nz/international/pacific-news/385679/west-papuans-urged-to-boycott-indonesian-elections

Since the 1960s, the ‘security approach’ by Indonesia was the biggest obstacle to finding a conclusion to debate surrounding two historical aspects relevant to West Papua’s demand for independence: first, West New Guinea’s past as part of the Dutch colony and its relations with Indonesia and second, the 1969 referendum, the so-called Act of Free Choice, to decide West Papua’s fate.

From the very beginning, Indonesian nationalism paved the way for its independence which was proclaimed on August 17, 1945. However, West Papua was never part of the conversation. Mohammad Hatta made this perfectly clear in a meeting between Indonesian representatives and the Japanese warlord in Saigon, Vietnam, 12 August 1945.

Mohammad Hatta who later became Indonesia’s first Vice – President said:

"... the Papuans are from the Negroid race, Melanesian people, so let the Papuans determine their own destiny ...".

Indonesia’s first president Soekarno also argued at the time that Papuans were still primitive so the independence of the Indonesian nation can do without them.

On August 17, 1945, Indonesia was proclaimed independent to cover the region included in the Dutch East Indies, namely "From Sabang to Amboina", not including the Dutch-New Guinea or West Papua.

So, the unitary Republic of Indonesia was defined by territorial boundary. The 1969 Act of Free Choice therefore is a demonstration of this fact. It provides the legal basis for a different conversation on West Papua. https://asiapacificreport.nz/2019/03/27/violence-in-papua-must-end-before-talks-says-nz-foreign-minister/

In the wake of the Indonesian democratization which began in 1998, it was taken for granted that post – 1998 Indonesia was to be built on democratic tenets of justice and human rights, constitutionalism, and rule of law.

And, there was momentum to revise the narration of West Papua’s history. Firstly, democracy has empowered the Papuans as the victims of a power struggle to challenge the previous Indonesia’s monolithic narration of history. Secondly, the Papuans’ alternative narration of history also serves as a medium of liberation from oppression by the Indonesian government. Thirdly, the Papuan story counters the theory that the narration of history is a privilege of the ruler and the winner.

The winds of change blew. In 2015, the same year Professor Dr. Adnan Buyung Nasution died, United Liberation Movement for West Papua or ULMWP was born led by Chairman and Leader of Free West Papua Campaign based in Britain, Benny Wenda. ULMWP grew in status.

And, Benny Wenda received a huge show of support during his visit to Ghana at the official invitation of the Government of Ghana to attend the country's birthday.

He was further interviewed for 1 hour live on TV 3 to explain the West Papua Conflict and struggle for independence for decades since the 1960s by the people of West Papua.

In the networking that was built to promote the Free West Papua platform in Africa, Benny Wenda also connected with Bishop Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela's family in South Africa. The conversation on West Papua in the African Continent Papua went as far as corridors of power of the Africa, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP).

Apart from Africa, there is Europe.

The Free West Papua Campaign platform has been another success story in another continent. Europe.  In its meeting in Brussels, a presentation was made on West Papua at a joint meeting of the European Union Parliament in October, 2015.

In the region that West Papua belongs, the internationalisation of the independence struggle gave rise to another regional forum called South Pacific Forum. But, the supranational organisation would be unnecessary. MSG and PIF diplomacy is sufficient to channel the West Papua issue to the UN General Assembly for resolution. https://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2019/03/21/new-era-indonesia-south-pacific-engagement.html

For West Papua and its people, the promise of sovereignty has never been realized, despite a long and fraught struggle for independence from Indonesia.

Indonesia’s decades – old ‘secret war’ on Australia’s doorstep is over. There is no need for propaganda now, time up.

The advent of internationalisation of the West Papua issue confirms the observations made by Professor Amien Rais and Professor Dr. Adnan Buyung Nasution. Indonesia got it wrong for a long time.

West Papua will be free. And, for a simple reason. Indonesia failed to win the hearts of Papuans. https://www.radionz.co.nz/international/pacific-news/378810/papua-governor-calls-for-military-to-withdraw-from-nduga

Opposition says Indonesia’s ‘futsal gift’ should not deter our stand for West Papua

OPPOSITION Leader Hon Matthew Wale says the new Futsal Stadium handed over by the Indonesian government should not deter our support for fellow Melanesians in West Papua.

Whilst acknowledging the gift from Indonesia, Hon Wale said Solomon Islands should never allow this to be the 30 pieces of silver to betray our fellow Melanesians in West Papua.

He said the new Futsal Stadium is a dream come true for the futsal code in the country, but it should never change our stand and perspective on West Papua.

The Opposition Leader said it is not right that Solomon Islands voice is silenced by this ‘gift’ from speaking for the voiceless people of West Papua who continue to suffer under the colonial oppression of Indonesia.

Hon Wale said the Prime Minister knows well because he is a strong supporter of West Papua.

“Our current Prime Minister is a strong supporter of West Papua and I urge him to raise the issue of West Papua to the visiting Indonesia delegation during their meetings,” he said.

Hon Wale also issued a call to the visiting Indonesia government delegation to facilitate Solomon Islands earlier calls to enable the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to visit West Papua.

West Papua is part of PNG

2022 NGE - It is here. After 10 Parliaments of independent and sovereign PNG, we begin to count the costs.

West Papua is part of PNG.

Late Fred Mambrasar coined the Papuan world - view called ' Sorong - Samarai in order to escalate a clear foreign policy prescription on West Papua.

2022 NGE happens in days time. Prime Minister James Marape raised the West Papua issue at the 76th UN General Assembly session last year, 2021.

This year, 2022, PNG on Prime Minister James Marape's watch signed 31 MOUs with Indonesia to increase the content of PNG/Indonesia bilateral relations.

The closest West Papua got to in the internationalisation of the independence struggle on PNG soil was at the MSG Leaders Summit held in Port Moresby, 2018.

We congratulate Prime Minister Peter O'Neill for the high definition of Melanesian consciousness as it peaked, and awakening cascading clearly into the future.

ULMWP President Benny Wenda attended alongside other Heads of States from the 6 Melanesian Spearhead Group or MSG member countries.

Wenda was given Head of State protocol treatment in his own right.

Late Fred Mambrasar was optimistic the script could be escalated better, with PNG leading the way from 2018 into the future.

PNG's 11th Parliament commences in August, 2022. It is 3 months away. The political system in the country gets a new leash on life, regenerated.

West Papua is in the same house.

Least we forget. Papua tetap merdeka.

Lae's West Papua community joined in celebrating Papua New Guinea's 46th Independence at the PNG University of Technology yesterday

#PNGNews.

John Lanta, a leader of the community and staff member of the university said their culture is slowly dying because they've been away from home for many years.

"West Papuans who live abroad, especially in PNG are so thankful and honoured that we are being invited to special events, especially Independence Day for PNG. It's a big thing for us...it's touching because our people have been fighting for independence for 52 years and we are still waiting."

Mr. Lanta's parents fled from West Papua in 1967 and settled in Papua New Guinea in 1969. This is a story similar to that of many other West Papuans who have now made Papua New Guinea home.

"Our parents told us about our customs, traditional stories, practices, so we try to keep that alive while we are in exile."

While congratulating Papua New Guinea on 46 years of independence, Mr Lanta said he hopes that one day the West Papuan dream of independence, becomes a reality.

Special autonomy for Papua: The trickery of Jakarta's policy

For the last 20 years the 2001 Papua Special Autonomy Law has provided a cover for the expansion of a form of "guided democracy''. With the House of Representatives' unanimous decision to pass the revision of the law on July 15, the last vestige of “local autonomy” has now been removed. President Joko "Jokowi'' Widodo’s government reportedly made a swift decision, accepting the recommendations of the Home Ministry and a special state-sanctioned committee's amendment to the law, causing outrage among indigenous Papuans. This is part of a revisionist history that overlooks the structural violence, systemic racism and unjust laws that abhorrently distort any notion of democracy in Papua. These changes were instituted without consent of the Papuans. Article 77 of the 2001 Papua Special Autonomy Law stipulate…

SADARLAH..

RAKYAT HARUS MEMILIH PEMIMPIN YANG RENDAH HATI DAN TIDAK ANGKUH.

RAKYAT HARUS MEMILIH PEMIMPIN YANG KONSISTEN DALAM MENJALANKAN KEPUTUSAN POLITIK BANGSA.

RAKYAT HARUS TUNDUK KEPADA PEMIMPIN YANG DIPILIH SECARA DEMOKRATIS.

RAKYAT HARUS PAHAM BAHWA KITA BUTUHKAN PEMIMPIN BANGSA YANG MAMPU MEYAKINKAN PUBLIK DUNIA.

DUNIA AKAN TERTAWA DAN MENYESAL KETIKA KITA BANGSA PAPUA TIDAK MENGHORMATI KETUA ULMWP TUAN BENNY WENDA YANG TELAH MENERIMA NOBEL/AWARDS dari Wali kota Oxfort Inggris.

West Papua: up to 15 dead as rebels and Indonesian soldiers clash

Deaths reported on both sides in firefight during work on trans-Papua highway

As many as 15 people are believed to have been killed in a firefight between Indonesian soldiers and Papuan independence fighters, adding to more than two dozen deaths in the simmering conflict since November.

Indonesia’s military said three of its soldiers, and seven to 10 independence fighters, died on Thursday when a force of 50 to 70 rebels carrying firearms as well as spears and arrows attacked a group of 25 soldiers in a battle lasting several hours.

Sebby Sambom, a spokesman for the West Papua National Liberation Army, said five soldiers were killed and admitted no deaths for the Papuans. Both sides claimed to have captured weapons.

Muhammad Aidi, the military spokesman for Indonesia’s easternmost Papua region, said the soldiers had arrived in the area to guard work on the trans Papua highway and the attack was unprovoked. According to Sambom, the soldiers had burned traditional dwellings and interrogated villagers.

Two helicopters sent to take the bodies of the three killed soldiers to the mining town of Timika were shot at but eventually landed after Indonesian forces returned fire, Aidi said.

The highlands district was the location of a December attack by Papuan fighters on workers at a construction site for the trans Papua highway that killed 19. Large numbers of people have been displaced by military and police security operations since the attack.

At least 31 people have died since early November in an apparent escalation of attacks by the West Papua National Liberation Army. The figure doesn’t include unconfirmed civilian deaths that Papuan activists say resulted from security operations.

An insurgency has simmered in Papua, which makes up the western half of the island of New Guinea, since the early 1960s when Indonesia annexed the Dutch-controlled territory.

Discrimination against indigenous Papuans and abuses by Indonesian police and military have drawn renewed attention globally as Indonesia campaigns for membership in the UN’s human rights watchdog.

The exiled leader of the Papuan independence movement, Benny Wenda, in January presented a 1.8m-signature petition calling for self-determination to the UN human rights chief in Geneva.
